Turf vs Synthetic Grass: What Suits Hornsby Properties?
It’s a question we get asked reasonably often when we’re out doing landscaping work: is it better to lay natural turf or go with synthetic grass? Like most things, it comes down to what the space is for and how much upkeep you’re realistically going to put into it.
Natural Turf

Natural turf is generally the better option if you’ve got kids or pets using the yard regularly, since it’s softer underfoot and doesn’t heat up in the sun the way synthetic surfaces can. It also does a better job of managing stormwater, letting rain soak into the ground rather than run off.
The trade-off is maintenance — mowing, watering, fertilising and dealing with shaded or high-traffic patches that thin out over time. Turf variety matters a lot here too; some handle shade and foot traffic far better than others, which is worth getting advice on rather than guessing.
Synthetic Grass
Synthetic grass is the lower-maintenance option, and it holds its colour and shape in shaded areas or high-traffic spots where natural turf often struggles. For smaller courtyards or areas that don’t get much direct rain, it can be a genuinely practical choice.
It does get warmer underfoot in full sun during summer, and drainage still needs to be set up properly underneath, or you can end up with water pooling rather than draining away.
What Tends to Suit Hornsby Blocks
Hornsby’s mix of established trees, sloped blocks and clay-heavy soil in places means both options can work, but the right choice really depends on the specific spot. A shaded backyard under gum trees might do better with synthetic grass than turf that struggles to get enough light, while an open, sunny front lawn is usually well suited to natural turf.
Soil preparation matters either way. Poor drainage or compacted clay soil underneath will cause problems for turf or synthetic grass alike if it isn’t addressed first. Have a look at our landscaping and turf services in Hornsby for what we cover.
